History

Tyrone Square was opened in 1972 by Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, featuring four anchor stores: Sears, J. C. Penney, Maas Brothers, and the first Florida location of J. W. Robinson's. At its opening, the mall featured more than 110 stores, including Hickory Farms, Chess King, Thom McAn, McCrory, Spencer Gifts, Bresler's Ice Cream, Hot Sam pretzels, Orange Julius, Kinney Shoes, Hallmark Cards, Casual Corner, Waldenbooks, and a six-screen movie theater.

Robinson's became Maison Blanche in 1987, later closing and becoming Dillard's four years later. In 1991, Maas Brothers closed to make way for Burdines. Mall expansion in 1998 brought a food court and a Borders Books & Music store. Burdines became Burdines-Macy's in 2003, then simply Macy's in 2005. The long-standing Gap closed in 2015, with a toys and games store taking its place. The Cobb Luxury 10 Theaters opened in 2016, with 10 theaters and 1,200 seats. It is located in an adjacent yet detached building near JCPenney.

In late 2015, Sears announced that it would close its Tyrone location in January, 2017 due to an upcoming redevelopment project that will bring forth Dick's Sporting Goods, Petsmart, Lucky's Market, and other possible retailers. Sears officially closed for good on January 28, 2017.
